Was Islam Spread by Sword?

A common misconception many people have regarding Islam is that it was spread by the sword. Many people think that Islam prevailed because Muslims ordered people to convert or they will be killed. When we examine both Islamic scriptures and history, we find that this is false.

Prophet Muhammad stayed in Mecca for 13 years telling people about Islam. Although the leaders of Mecca rejected the message of Prophet Muhammad and kept on persecuting and torturing Muslims, many people converted to Islam. These people were not forced to convert, but they were tortured for being Muslims. When Prophet Muhammad called the people of Medina to embrace Islam, many of them embraced it. Then Prophet Muhammad migrated to Medina to establish the first Islamic state. Prophet Muhammad didn’t force the people of Medina to become Muslims, but he warned them that all the Arabs will fight them.

Although the Islamic state was weak against Mecca, the people of Mecca couldn’t defeat it. People kept on entering Islam and migrating to Medina. None of these people were converted by sword although the Islamic state was much weaker.

The Quran is clear when it says that there is no compulsion in religion. Non-Muslims in an Islamic state pay the Jizya, which is a tax paid by non-Muslims to the Islamic state to protect them. Not only that but the weak and poor non-Muslims were exempted from paying. It may be said that Muslims invaded different countries to force them to be Muslims. The reason for Islamic conquests was to help Islam reach people. When Muslims come to a city, they invite them to either Islam or to pay the Jizya or to fight.

In the first two options, Muslims will not invade the city. In the third case, Muslims will fight the city and invade it. Muslims have no aim except to tell people about the right way of God to save them from hell. All they want is that Islam reaches these people. If the authority ruling the city refused that Muslim scholars enter the city and tell people about Islam, then they are an obstacle against telling people about the right way to God. People have the option either to accept or reject Islam, but the message should reach them.

People in some countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia embraced Islam although no Muslim armies had gone there. No one forced them to convert. They embraced Islam by dealing with Muslim merchants. Non-Muslims live with Muslims in many Islamic states. Muslims never forced them to embrace Islam.

Most of the Islamic countries were invaded by British, French, Italian, and Spanish armies and were occupied for tens of years. If Muslims in these countries were forced to become Muslims, then the one who forced them is no more ruling and they can now leave Islam. But actually, the European armies left these countries and Islam remained. This is proof that people were not forced to be Muslims, but they are convinced of Islam.
